The Rev. Patricia Barth

Bethel in black robeRev. Patricia Barth joined Bethel as Interior Senior Pastor in February 2016.  She has a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., a United Methodist seminary that educates pastors of all denominations, and a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from Washington Theological Union, a Roman Catholic Seminary that has since closed.  Rev. Barth is a professional interim minister trained by the Interim Ministry Network She is ordained by the Potomac Association of the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ.  Here is her Statement on Ministry:

I believe God has called me to live out my ministry as an ordained leader who can assist people in their Christian walk by preaching, faith formation for all ages, pastoral care and celebrating the sacraments.  Since childhood, I have felt especially drawn to the liturgical ministries of healing and baptizing.

Church is, or should be, the place where members and friends are drawn into the life and worship of the community, to be restored and inspired to go out again in mission to a diverse and pluralistic world; to heal, uplift and learn from the broken and marginalized.

My specific call is to interim ministry. The interim period between called pastors can be sacred, if we let it be. This important time in a congregation’s life should be transformative, never simply “marking time” or “filling the pulpit” until a new pastor is called. Ideally, it is a prayerful, fruitful time of self-study and a seeking of God’s vision for this particular church in the world.   As an interim minister, my job is to be a calming presence, facilitator and pastor to the congregation as it completes its work of transition.

Rev. Barth grew up in Takoma Park, MD and currently lives in Springfield, VA with her husband Ed Scorza and their two dogs and one cat.  They have two grown sons, one in New York City and the other in Portland, Oregon.  Their home congregation in Maryland is Rockville United Church.Ed and I at Bethel
