Support AFAC

Arlington Food Assistance Center’s greatest need is for low sugar cold breakfast cereal. Next time you are shopping, please consider buying an extra box and bringing it to church with you on Sunday. For more information, please head to AFAC’s website at www.afac.org

CROPWalk 2013

The 2013 Arlington CROPWalk will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 starting at 8:30 a.m. at Arlington Forest UMC. The aim of the walk is to help raise money for Church World Service to fight hunger around the world. One fourth of the money collected comes back to Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). Last year, Bethel’s walkers raised $5930. If you want to walk for CROP, please contact Art Lipman (703-920-6423). If you can’t walk, please sponsor our walkers generously.

Be a Host

We are in need of hosts for fellowship time through September and October. If you are able to prepare and serve a few light snacks for worshipers to enjoy after church, please sign up downstairs in Fellowship Hall or speak with one of the pastors.

A Great Success!

On Sunday, September 15th at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary, Bethel United Church of Christ and AFAC co-sponsored a screening of the film “A Place at the Table” about hunger in America. The event was a great success! Friends and neighbors arrived in the sanctuary for the screening as well as a lucrative panel discussion with community stakeholders.

Almost 60 people attended the screening in Bethel’s sanctuary to learn about how they can combat hunger in Arlington, VA. Event attendees brought 110 pounds of food and raised $185 for Arlington Food Assistance Center.

Additional information on “A Place at the Table” can be found at Magnolia Pictures and Ro*Co Films Educational websites.

Volunteers Needed!

We seek to extend radical hospitality to all guests at Bethel services and events. We are in need of a number of volunteers both prior to and on the day of film screening of “A Place at the Table” on September 15th to help ensure a smooth visit for all. To learn more about how you can use your gifts to help, talk to or email Janna Lipman at jmlipman@hotmail.com

Prayer Service

Join us on Wednesday, September 11th at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary as we lift our pray for world peace and reconciliation.  12 years after 9-11 we remember all those who lost their lives in the violent attacks on New York, DC and in the fields of Pennsylvania, as well the hundreds of thousands have lost their lives in the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt and elsewhere.  We pray for all those killed by acts of violence, for their families as they grieve, and for a world where peace is possible.  We hope you will join us.

Email Pastor Curlee if you would like childcare for the service.

Nursery Volunteers Needed

Church School is on summer break through the end of August. Children ages five and older are encouraged to stay engaged in worship, instead of leaving following Time with our Children during the Sunday morning service. Children under five years old are welcome in the nursery, which is always professionally staffed. With our growing number of children, we need one volunteer each week during the summer to assist in the nursery. If interested in volunteering, please sign up on the sheet posted outside the church office.

On Tuesday, June 18th Bethel hosted dinner for a multicultural group visiting DC to learn about building peace. This group include people from Germany, Namibia, the Lakota Indian tribe in South Dakota and members of United Church of Christ congregations in this country. A special “thank you” to everyone from Bethel who contributed to the dinner.

New Members

On Sunday, June 23rd, Bethel will be welcoming new members into our faith community. Each person brings their own gifts and experiences to church; everyone enriches our community by being here.  We are blessed by each new member. Welcome!  If you are interested in learning more about our fellowship, please speak with Pastor Kristen.

Game Night

Join us for Bethel’s “May Day Game Night” on Friday, May 17th at 5:30 p.m. There will be plenty of games and activities for adults and children. Hot dogs will be provided; bring a side dish to share. The fun and games–and fellowship–will take place in Bethel’s Fellowship Hall. All are welcome!
